ADISA MAINA OMAR
ADISA MAINA OMAR, is the founder of the International Academy of Ikologiks and Advanced Studies, Inc., now going into its eighteenth year of service. The academy is involved in the sponsorship of self-empowerment training programs throughout the nation, and the world. Omar, is an accomplished social/political activist, poet, herbalist, practicing Yoga Therapist, and Reiki practitioner. Adisa, is a graduate of Cornell University, where he obtained a degree in Developmental Psychology; and he has also graduated with a certification in Yoga Therapy from the Indian Institute of Yoga (Patna, India).
ADISA MAINA OMAR, born April 4, 1955 in the Bronx, New York, began his professional writing and publishing career in 1980, with the creation of his first literary work, entitled 60 to 80: Songs for the Black Struggle, which was published in 1981. This book, is a collection of lyrical poetry which Omar authored while living in Atlanta, Georgia, between 1979 & 1990. Also, while he was residing in Atlanta, Georgia, he became a co-founding member of the Southern Collective of African-American Writers.
Omars, continuing writing and research efforts, since 1980, have taken him to such distant and exotic places as Egypt(87), Cuba(86); and also, on several pilgrimages to the nation of India (84,89,92,93, 95). On his trips to India he has actively studied the African presence in India's antiquity (Indus Valley Civilization) and the enigmatic plight of the Dalits (India's lower castes); in addition, to Yoga, Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Meditation science/practice and other ancient alternative healing systems.
Adisa, says, "we must now, in this generation, revive the original system of African-centered thought, or more appropriately, Central Philosophy which fostered the foundations of human values, culture, religion and science throughout the world."
Over the past twenty years, Adisa, has left his mark on thousands of people, by giving quite freely of himself; offering his insights to such prestigious and respected bodies as the Congressional Black Caucus, Howard University - School of Communication, Progressive Life Center, Blacks In Government (B.I.G.), the Black Media Coalition, the former African-American think-tank, Institute of the Black World, the African Universal Institute; and also, through his present on going work with the International Academy of Ikologiks and Advanced Studies, Inc. .
In 1998, Omar, plans to publish a revised expanded edition of '60 to 80': Songs for the Black Struggle, under a new title, "A Paradoxical Faith: The Poetry & Essays of Adisa Maina Omar." This exciting new project will be available through AKU-Press International, in the Fall of 1998, with an accompanying calendar gift-set edition.
