About the Book
Experience the "life lessons" learned by an African-American woman — from growing up in a poor, rural Southern town, through adulthood as a mother, professional, wife, and “dreamer.” Thirty short stories told from diary/journal entries cover topics such as voodoo, roomies, tough girls, the “other” addicts, racism, and myths about women. Humorous, touching, enlightening, and inspiring!

The author started keeping a diary at the age of ten or eleven years old. Many of this book’s adventures are taken from her diary and journal with some “artistic license.” The author weaves a tale of adventure including tussles with Eve over her biblical rib, into thirty personality-shaping stories. Each short story gives the reader a glimpse into the hurdles one woman of color must leap over on the road to adulthood. Some hurdles she clears, others barely, and a few she misses completely.

The author adeptly calls each adventure “A Lesson in Strength of Mind.” She organizes each entry into the following sections:

 To Begin with: About Life’s “Battles”
 The Early Years: Southern Roots Run Deep!
 The Tough Years: Lost Innocence
 The Middle Years: Going North
 All Grown Up: Mostly
 Reflections: From a Fishbowl

Every story is brought to life in the raw: here a woman with a metal plate in her head; there, boys in their “hoods,”; everywhere; preying-sex-praying; everybody “Calling Earl.” And everyday, African-Americans of color winning another battle… Along the way, other people of color who find their path to life, love, and family lined with insane or bizarre events join the author in her adventures. Chicken on a Leash will leave the reader saying Amen!
